Transneft Diascan has commissioned a new type of tool for in-line inspection – an ultrasonic device with phased-array sensors. It is intended for in-line inspection of pipelines with diametres of 1020/1067/1220 mm (40/42/48") and allows to detect slit-shaped defects at early stages, which improves oil and petroleum products pipelines safe operation.
The inspection tool’s measuring system contains phased-array sensors, so that pipe walls and welds are inspected using dynamically controlled multi-angle inspection of pipe walls and welds lengthwise and crosswise towards the axis of the pipe. In addition to the phased-array sensors, WM sensors were integrated into the measuring system in order to detect metal loss defects, notches and lamination. The resolution of the WM measuring system along the circumference of the pipeline is 1.9 mm.
The development of the tool began in January 2016. The device underwent acceptance testing at Transneft Diascan’s test ground, as well as within a section of an operating oil pipeline.
