Transneft Diascan Commissions Ultrasonic Defectoscope of New Standard Size to Reveal Randomly Oriented Defects

Transneft Diascan has put into operation its examination set “Ultrasonic Defectoscope 20-DKP.00-00.000 to Reveal Randomly Oriented Defects”. The instrument was engineered by the Company’s designers and intended for inline inspection of oil and petroleum products pipelines with the diameter of 20”.

The defectoscope is fitted with an ultrasonic metering system, complete with WM sensors as well as CD sensors with two angles for sending the ultrasonic signal into the pipe wall. The instrument design ensures multiangle examination of slit-shaped defects, with longitudinal and transverse orientation.

The defectoscope development was underway from November 2015 until October 2018. In the integrated testing the instrument was checked for climatic (temperature from -40°С to +50°С) and mechanical exposures. The testing locations included the fluid test ground of Transneft Diascan, and the functioning Ufa – West oil pipeline operated by Transneft Urals. The verification confirmed that the detectability and defects metering by the instrument were compliant with the terms of reference.

As of now, Transneft Diascan operates 5 ultrasonic defectoscopes to reveal randomly oriented defects; these enable inline inspection of pipelines with the diameter from 20” to 48”.
