Transneft Diascan Upgrades its 20”-Diameter Magnetic Flaw Detector

Transneft Diascan has upgraded its MDScan 20” Magnetic Defectoscope inline diagnostic suite.

The upgraded version of the tool has a new MFL measuring system with a 20% higher sensibility enabling it to register small-size flaw dispersion field. This makes it possible to detect smaller defects of pipe walls, such as cracks, scratch marks and metal loss.

Besides, to reduce the measurement error when measuring the size of identified defects, the upgrading involved making the tool’s scanning pitch smaller both in the circumferential direction and in the direction of its movement.

Proprietary magnetic flaw detectors developed by Transneft Diascan are intended for pipeline control by determining the magnetic flux leakage in axial magnetisation in pipeline material and in lateral welds. The tools enable to detect weld flaws and corrosion (including pitting corrosion), cracks and mechanical damage to pipe walls.
